Border control officers can legally inspect your phone and laptop – all your messages, files, data stored in there, without a warrant. Here’s how to keep your data secure and private.
Full Writeup
Before you travel:
✅ Use burner devices (if possible) – cheap phone / laptop (Chromebook)
✅ Move sensitive data to the cloud or USB (and leave it at home)
✅ Delete sensitive files from devices
✅ Temporarily remove sensitive apps (Slack, Google Drive) + make a note of them to re-install later
⚠️ Note: End-to-end encrypted Messaging apps ( Signal / WhatsApp) don’t store messages in your account, so look up how to make a backup of your messages before deleting
✅ Back up your device
✅ Clear your web browsers
✅ Enable full-disk encryption (Phones are encrypted by default; Mac: FileVault / Windows 10 & 11 Pro: BitLocker / Others: Veracrypt)
✅ Make Social Media Accounts Private + remove/hide posts & writings that could be viewed as “critical”
